Cinderella shoes: The most unlikely trend of 2020, but perfect for Christmas

Although there was plenty of glamour to be found on the 2020 catwalks, the only fashion trends which seemed to take off this year revolved around loungewear and comfort. This was no surprise of course following the months of lockdown that people across the globe were forced to endure, and so we turned to cashmere and tracksuits rather then the high-octane eveningwear we had seen in the collections.

However, there was one accessory which appeared to counteract all this: the Cinderella-inspired shoe.

A trend undoubtedly started by Amina Muaddi, a footwear designer who against all odds saw her luxury party shoes fly off the shelves and her collections sell out during the height of lockdown. The designer's trademark statement heels appeared to be, as labelled by the Business of Fashion, "pandemic-proof", where women were snapping up glamorous heels despite having no place to wear them.

Of course, the cult designer status was key to this success, but so was the fairytale element of Muaddi's shoes, which included some 'Cinderella's glass slipper'-inspired designs, an aesthetic which she is not alone in tapping into.

From mid-range labels including By Far and Cult Gaia to luxury footwear heavyweights such as Christian Louboutin and Gianvito Rossi, the transparent party shoe covered in embellishment is undoubtedly one of the most prominent footwear trends of the year.

While it may not be the most lockdown-appropriate shoe, it is a style well worth investing in for the year ahead – and also makes the most fabulous Christmas party accessory, even if you're just dancing around in your own living room.
